Google will launch an update in May that will further boost the rankings of websites that are mobile-friendly, the second move a by the Internet search giant within the past year that puts increasing pressure on nonprofits to keep their sites updated.
“Getting good, relevant answers when you search shouldn’t depend on what device you’re using,” the company stated Wednesday in announcing the change. “You should get the best answer possible, whether you’re on a phone, desktop, or tablet.”
Last April, the company announced its initial move to favor mobile-friendly sites in its search algorithm. Websites fare better on Google searches if they automatically resize their content to fit users’ screens, among other mobile-friendly features.
The latest announcement boosts search results of mobile friendly sites further, making it even more important for nonprofits and other organizations that rely on web traffic for support to make sure their sites work well with a broad array of Internet-connected devices.
